Independent By-election Candidate Emmett Corcoran said today that all by-election candidates who have received parachute payments from previous political appointments should agree to pay back the money if elected to the Dail. He was shocked to discover recently that a number of Roscommon County Councillors received over 50,000 euros after loosing their seats in recent council elections.
Mr. Corcoran said that the payments are completely ridiculous at a time when most County Councils are technically insolvent and relying on overdrafts to meet day-to day costs. Under the gratuity current scheme councillors need just two years part-time service to qualify for a payment.
Mr. Corcoran said that, if elected as a TD, he would refuse to accept any pension or gratuity that comes after loosing an election. ‘It is an enjoyable public service to work as a TD and politicians should not be in the game to make money. You know before you seek election that at some point you are likely to loose an election and you need to be ready to return to your previous employment’.
"If you're willing to keep moving forward, eventually you will succeed."
