Former Independent Dail candidate Emmett Corcoran has this week confirmed that he is backing the Independent Alliance in the forthcoming general election.
The Strokestown based businessman and community activist who contested last years Roscommon-South Leitrim by-election has said that “The one criticism that came up time and time and again when canvassing was that Independents were not organised enough to effect real change. That is no longer the case; the Independent Alliance enables Independents to have the cohesive decision and policy making power of a party and the freedom of an independent. Some would say we want to have our cake and eat it too, well after 100 years of party political point scoring and divisiveness, maybe it’s time we gave a new brand of politics try.”
The Independent Alliance which has been spearheaded by Deputies Michael Fitzmaurice & Shane Ross held a workshop in The Hodson Bay Hotel last Saturday the 19th. Corcoran was present at the “think-tank” style workshop in what he described as a “supportive role,” confirming that he is not going to stand at this general election as an Independent Alliance candidate.
“I contested the bye-election against Michael Fitzmaurice last year before the alliance ever existed. In the last 12 months I have found myself working very well with Deputy Fitzmaurice. He is the Independent Alliance candidate for Roscommon-East Galway and he will have my support,” confirmed Corcoran.
Corcoran concluded by saying “Roscommon-East Galway is one the few constituencies where it is looking very likely that we will elect two independents, I hope we can make that a reality. Michael & Denis have both represented the people of this region fantastically and deserve to be re-elected regardless of whether they’re involved in the alliance or not. The Independent Alliance makes the independent brand stronger and more capable of effecting real seismic change in Irish politics.”
