“Businesses through-out affected area's have had to endure significant added costs in recent months as a result of the boil water notices and tomorrow (Tuesday) many will be forced to reduce their services or even close as a result of essential maintenance being carried out on the water system. It seems only fair that these businesses have the costs of these disruptions written off against their water rates.”
Since calling on the people of Roscommon & Leitrim to boycott domestic water charges a number of weeks ago, until the water quality was improved; several business owners have approached me in relation to the significant cost they have had to endure as a result of the boil water notices and tomorrow's shut off of water due to essential maintenance.
Being practical as ever business owners are aware that the maintenance must go ahead and accept that the disruption is unavoidable. The concerns local business owners have voiced with myself is that they would like to see compensation forthcoming from Irish Water for the loss of business and indeed the additional costs they have been forced to endure in recent times.
In the past the County Council were proactive in compensating business owners who found themselves in similar situations. Business owners would now like to have some clarity on how Irish Water would plan on structuring compensations to those inconvenienced. To the best of my knowledge and to that of the business owners I have spoken with there has been no formal channels established as of yet. I am calling on Irish Water to address the issue at this time.
It has also been brought to my attention by a number of Local Representatives that Irish Water have failed to adequately inform them and the public of tomorrow's “turn off” and that in the future more must be done to inform the public and their representatives of such actions.
I also welcome today's announcement by the EPA calling on Irish Water to rectify issues surrounding Roscommon's water supply.
