“It is utterly insane that the establishment expects anyone in Roscommon to pay for water when there are parts of the developing world with better water quality. We must force our elected representatives to stand with us in a county-wide Boycott” - Emmett Corcoran
Until such a time as the quality of water through-out the entire constituency of Roscommon-South Leitrim is such that we can drink it with-out risking becoming ill, we must boycott the payment of water charges. Whether you live in an affected area or not we should all refuse to pay all water charges.
We are having yet another regressive tax imposed on us. Even so, many people accept that if we use a service we should pay something for it. What nobody can seem to come to grips with is the fact that we are now being expected to pay for a service that we are not receiving‽
It seems almost like a running joke at this stage. The water has been so bad for so long that we have almost given up on it ever improving. Well the fact of the matter is it has to be improved. In 2014 it is inconceivable that we don't have a safe water supply in rural Ireland. We must not settle for a reduced rate or any other quasi-soultion that may be proposed to us. If we do we have lost. As long as we hold out they have an incentive to fix the problem. Once we pay we will be forced to endure a sub-standard service.
The dogs on the street won't drink the water and I am calling on all people in affected and unaffected area's to take a stand. Rural Ireland has been walked on one too many times and now we're finished. No more will we lie down and take this grotesque abuse of power. Let us, the people of Roscommon & Leitrim; call, text, email and message our local representatives (and would be representatives) and force them to start representing. We have elected them and it is now time that they stand by us. Change will not just happen it must be made happen. The politicians we have elected have told us they will stand by us, well let this be the test of their character. Let them show us what they are really made of. Let them prove their worth!
I will be meeting with people over the next number of weeks and will be organising public meetings to show the powers to be that we have drawn a line in the sand. If all the people of rural Ireland were to do the same, maybe just maybe the establishment will wake up and realise that we won't be walked on any more. We're not looking for anything special just water we can drink!
