“Posters do nothing to inform the electorate and are a waste of time and money. In politics like in business wasting time or money is detrimental. Never mind wasting both. That is why I believe it is time to end the insane and archaic practice of plastering every lamppost, gate and ditch in the country with ego-stroking posters ” - Emmett Corcoran
I'm not too proud to admit that I am likely to be the least well known candidate to contest this bye election. I am essentially starting this race with negative equity as regards profile but even being in that position it seems utterly insane to me, and anyone I know, that in 2014 our political system has not made it beyond the same practices our ancestors engaged in since the formation of our nation.
In modern Ireland our educated and informed electorate does not need to have posters, flyers and other prehistoric-spam cluttering up our homes and streets. As anecdotal as my evidence may be, I am yet to meet one person who ever supported a candidate because they had a nice poster. It's true that most the time posters are not likely to hurt a candidates chances but why do we choose to engage in a totally redundant and overly expensive tradition?
Today we have local newspaper that give fantastic coverage to campaigns and campaigners. We have local and regional radio stations that strive to inform the electorate on the issues of the day. We have social media, websites and email. All these mediums are at our disposal. All of these mediums can be referenced openly and freely, and yet the political establishment chooses to go out of their way to add cost to the election process with little or no return on that investment.
I am asking Ivan Connaughton, as the only other candidate to have officially declared his intention to run and as a fellow entrepreneur, to join me in calling on all other candidates who enter the race to support a “POSTER FREE” campaign. We are entering a new era in Irish politics. People want to see representatives lead from the front and enact real change. Let us truly mark a turning point in the way we do things and make this bye election the first to go poster free. The people we want to represent don't need to see our faces plastered up every lamppost and we don't need them to. At the end of the day posters don't win the support of the people, the candidates and their policies do.
